About PharmaSim

What is PharmaSim?

PharmaSim is a marketing management simulation in which students manage the over-the-counter cold medicine business of Allstar Brands. The starting brand, Allround, competes in a dynamic packaged-goods market alongside several established competitors.

Students manage the brand over multiple simulated years and may expand the product portfolio as new opportunities become available.

Who is PharmaSim designed for?

PharmaSim is designed for:

  • Marketing Management
  • Brand Management
  • Marketing Strategy
  • Product Management and integrated marketing courses

The simulation uses the packaged-goods industry to help students apply marketing concepts in a realistic, data-rich setting.

What do students actually do in the simulation?

Students join the Allstar Brands over-the-counter medicine team and manage product and marketing decisions over as many as 10 simulated years. They:

  • Manage the Allround brand and later product opportunities
  • Set prices and promotional allowances
  • Allocate advertising, consumer promotion, and trade promotion
  • Choose advertising messages and target segments
  • Manage sales force and distribution support
  • Purchase market research and analyze competitors
  • Make product reformulation and new-product decisions

What core skills does PharmaSim teach?

PharmaSim develops practical skills in:

  • Situation analysis: understanding customers, competitors, the company, and the market environment
  • Segmentation, targeting, and positioning: identifying attractive segments and building a clear value proposition
  • Marketing-mix management: coordinating product, price, promotion, and distribution
  • Budget allocation: making tradeoffs across competing marketing investments
  • Marketing research: choosing and interpreting reports rather than purchasing data automatically
  • Long-term strategy: balancing current profitability with product development and future growth

Setup, scenarios, and scheduling

How long does PharmaSim take to run?

PharmaSim includes up to 10 decision periods, with each period representing one simulated year. The recommended course experience is 6–10 periods.

The instructor can adjust the number of periods, scenario, product complexity, research availability, incidents, and assignments to fit the course.

How does the team structure work?

The recommended team size is 3–4 students; for online courses, 2–3 students is recommended. One student serves as team leader and advances the simulation after checking that decisions are complete and within budget.

Team members share one decision set, encouraging discussion, analysis, and negotiated marketing choices.

How does student responsibility change over time?

By default, students begin at the Brand Assistant level, progress to Assistant Brand Manager, and then take on Brand Manager responsibilities.

As they advance, additional decisions become available, including sales force, channel allowances, product development, and broader portfolio management.

How customizable is PharmaSim?

Instructors can choose among seven scenarios and adjust team size, decision periods, practice, replay rules, incidents, assignments, market-research access, decision availability, and the timing of management-level progression.

The scenarios vary in market growth, inflation, costs, budgets, and competitive difficulty, allowing instructors to refresh the experience or select an appropriate challenge level.

What is the instructor's role during the simulation?

The instructor serves as a marketing coach and consultant. Course reports make it possible to identify teams that are overspending, poorly positioned, under-distributed, or failing to connect research with decisions.

Rather than revealing the model, the instructor can ask teams to explain their analysis, objectives, strategy, and expected results.

What students do in the simulation

What recurring decisions do students make?

Depending on the period and instructor settings, students make decisions about:

  • Manufacturer’s suggested retail price
  • Advertising budget, message, and target segment
  • Consumer and trade promotion
  • Sales force allocation and channel support
  • Product formulation and product line
  • Market research purchases
  • Digital marketing
  • Research and development and new products

How does the marketing budget work?

Teams receive a marketing budget and must allocate it among advertising, promotion, sales force, research, and product-development needs. The available budget changes with the scenario and the performance of the business.

Students learn that spending more is not automatically better; investments must support the target market, brand positioning, product life cycle, and expected return.

What market research is available?

PharmaSim offers a range of reports on the market, consumers, channels, competitors, product awareness, purchase behavior, advertising, pricing, and sales.

Instructors may require teams to select and purchase research reports or may provide all reports in advance. This makes research selection itself part of the learning experience.

How do product development decisions work?

As the simulation progresses, teams may have opportunities to reformulate Allround or develop new products. These decisions require lead time and force students to anticipate future consumer needs rather than react only to current results.

Product decisions affect the company’s portfolio, target segments, cannibalization risk, and long-term profitability.

Can students test decisions before advancing?

Yes. Students can use decision-analysis tools to forecast demand, spending, and financial results before the team leader advances the simulation.

Depending on instructor settings, replay or restart options may also allow teams to revisit earlier decisions during practice or live play.

Can students practice before graded team play?

Yes. The recommended setup includes two individual practice periods. After practice, the simulation is restarted and students begin the team experience from the original starting position.

Practice helps students learn the interface, explore reports, and understand budget constraints before grades depend on performance.

Learning, assessment, and support

What kinds of incidents are included?

PharmaSim includes managerial incidents that add realistic marketing and organizational issues to selected periods. Instructors can choose which incidents appear and when.

The incidents encourage students to explain and defend decisions that may involve ethics, customer communication, channel relationships, regulation, research, or internal management.

How is student performance measured?

Students and instructors can track sales, market share, gross margin, net income, cumulative net income, stock price, brand awareness, distribution, and other marketing and financial measures.

The instructor can create a weighted score that reflects selected course objectives rather than relying only on final profit or rank.

What assignments and assessments are available?

The instructor resources include case and concepts quizzes, peer evaluation, and assignments covering major marketing-management tasks, including:

  • Situation Analysis and Marketing Plan
  • Demand Forecast and Budget Allocation
  • Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning
  • Pricing and Promotion Analysis
  • Marketing Research and Competitive Analysis
  • Product Portfolio and New-Product Decisions
  • Management Audit and Final Presentation

What support do instructors receive?

Interpretive administers simulation logistics and handles student technical questions. Instructors are paired with a customer relationship manager and receive demonstrations, presentations, assignments, teaching notes, and web-based performance comparisons.

This support allows the instructor to concentrate on course integration, feedback, and marketing coaching.
